NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School)

NOLS Semester Experience

The fall of 2018 I completed a semester for outdoor educators with NOLS. For three months, the curriculum focused on developing technical and interpersonal skills in outdoor recreation, education and teaching, environmentally sustainable outdoor recreation practices, diversity and inclusion, risk management, and environmental studies. 

Certifications during the course included:

- Wilderness First Responder (WFR)

- Leave No Trace Master Educator (LNT)

- Recreational Avalanche 1 (AAA)

The course consisted of:

12 Days - Backpacking in the Wind River Range, WY

10 Days - Wilderness First Responder course, WY

21 Days - Rock climbing in Unaweep Canyon, CO

25 Days - Canyoneering in the Dirty Devil region, UT

11 Days Backcountry Skiing in the Wyoming Range, WY

We had a real, two-day litter carry to evacuate one of our course-mates after an ankle injury. The litter was improvised with sticks, tarps, sleeping pads, and jackets. PC: Jennifer Grasso
